Consultant Minimal Access Surgeon

Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar is a Consultant Minimal Access Surgeon who works at Hinduja Hospitals, Mahim & Khar and Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Considered a national expert in Minimal Access (keyhole) Surgery, he has 31 years of experience in the field. He offers treatment for a variety of abdominal diseases and thoracic diseases as well as hernias.

Dr Bhandarkar completed his undergraduate studies from Grant Medical College (1981 – 1987) and surgical residency from J. J. Hospital, Mumbai (1988 – 1991). On May 31st, 1990 Dr Bhandarkar participated in the first-ever laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed in India and since then developed a keen interest in laparoscopic surgery. He trained extensively in the United Kingdom from 1992 to 1997. In 1997, he was awarded the prestigious “Traveling Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow” to visit the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Australia and train further in laparoscopic surgery. The same year he also obtained the ‘Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery’ from University of Strasbourg, France. He returned to India in 1997 and developed a practice exclusively dedicated to Minimal Access Surgery.

Being a keen academic, Dr Bhandarkar has to his credit over ninety publications, five published abstracts and 18 book chapters / invited contributions. As a sought after speaker, he has given more than 500 presentations, video lectures and invited talks at National and International conferences. He has authored a book titled “A Primer of Laparoscopic Surgery’ and in 2011 was the Guest Editor for an issue of Journal of Minimal Access Surgery dedicated to “Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery”. He has served as an Associate Editor of Indian Journal of Surgery and as the Editor of Journal of Minimal Access Surgery from 2005 to 2020. As a passionate educator he actively participates in conferences and training workshops around the country to train the younger surgeons and  his colleagues in the speciality of minimal access surgery.

As an acknowledged expert in hernia surgery,  he has served as the Hon. Secretary of and President of Hernia Society of India. He served as the Course Director for Laparoscopic General Surgery at the Center of Excellence of Minimal Access Surgery Training (CEMAST) from 2011 to 2020. Dr Bhandarkar’s strives to make his expertise available to patients from all strata of the society and from around the country.
