Laparoscopic appendicectomy
This is a video is demonstration of a laparoscopic appendicectomy (appendix removal surgery) performed by Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar. Acute appendicitis is a common abdominal emergency. In patients who form an appendicular mass, the initial episode is treated conservatively. The surgery is carried out after 6 to 8 weeks. This operation allows the patient to recover rapidly and with minimum postoperative discomfort. -
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for a patient with a large gallstone
This video depicts a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery) performed by Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar in a patient with a large gallstone. Presence of large gallstone is a risk factor for developing gallbladder cancer. In such patients surgery is recommended, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy allows the patient to recover rapidly with minimal discomfort.

Laparoscopic repair of a double trans-mesocolic, trans-omental hernia
This is a video of a rare type of internal hernia repaired laparoscopically by Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar. Simultaneous herniation of the intestine through defects in both the mesocolon and lesser omentum is extremely rare. The diagnosis of this entity may often be delayed because of the vague symptoms. When diagnosed, usually by way of a CT scan, laparoscopic surgery provides an excellent option for treating this condition.

Subtotal cholecystectomy in severe acute cholecystitis
This is a lecture delivered by Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar during a debate on usefulness of subtotal cholecystectomy in patients with severe acute cholecystitis. Surgeons aim to remove the entire gallbladder when operating on someone with gallstone disease. However, in presence of severe infection / inflammation around the gallbladder this may be neither always possible nor safe. In such circumstances, it is a prudent and well-accepted practice to remove as much of the gallbladder as is safely possible (subtotal cholecystectomy) to prevent injury to the bile ducts – a complication with disastrous consequences. Dr Bhandarkar strongly puts forward the argument for the selective use of this strategy in the interest of patient safety.

Thoracoscopic biopsy of a superior mediastinal lymph node
This is a video of a thoracoscopic biopsy of an enlarged lymph node situated in the superior mediastinum close to important blood vessels. Due to its location, a CT-guided biopsy was not possible. Thoracoscopy allowed the surgeon to obtain adequate tissue for performing various tests. Laparoscopic repair of an incisional hernia at the site of ileostomy closure
This is a video depicts a laparoscopic repair of an incisional hernia at the site of ileostomy closure performed by Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar. Hernias occurring at the site of closure of stomas tend to be challenging to repair. Intra-abdominal adhesions which are common following previous surgery. require meticulous adhesiolysis without injury to the bowel . A laparoscopic repair, as performed here, allows the patient to recover rapidly.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery) in a morbidly obese patient
This is a video of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery) in a morbidly obese patient (BMI 47) performed by Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar. Gallstones tend to be common in the morbidly obese. The surgery can be challenging in these patients because of the fatty liver that makes retraction of the gallbladder difficult. Moreover, bulky omentum and colon may compromise visualisation of the Calot's triangle for safe dissection.
